Gavin Lobo Health provides comprehensive Adult ADHD Assessments for both enrolled and casual patients.
Understanding Adult ADHD
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain manages focus, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Many adults don't realize they have ADHD because symptoms are often dismissed as stress, disorganization, or laziness.
What Adult ADHD Can Look Like
While everyone struggles with focus occasionally, adult ADHD is a persistent pattern that can make daily work and relationships feel much harder than they should be.
You might notice everyday challenges like:
- Unfinished Projects: Having the ability to do the work, but struggling to cross the finish line.
- Time Blindness: Consistently losing track of time, procrastinating, or forgetting important deadlines.
- Physical or Mental Restlessness: Finding it difficult to sit still or experiencing a mind that constantly jumps between topics.
- Social Impulsivity: Interrupting others during conversations without realizing you are doing it, or making sudden decisions.
- Low Frustration Tolerance: Feeling easily distracted by your surroundings or completely overwhelmed by small setbacks.
A professional assessment can clarify whether ADHD is affecting your life, giving you the answers and treatment options you need to move forward.
How Your Assessment is Conducted
Dr Gavin Lobo uses:
DSM-5 diagnostic criteria – The standard framework for ADHD diagnosis
Standardized assessment tools – Validated questionnaires to measure ADHD symptoms
Medical checks – Blood tests, blood pressure, and heart rate to rule out other conditions
Mental health screening – Assessment for anxiety, mood, or other co-occurring conditions.
How the ADHD Assessment Process Works
Step 1: Get in Touch
Email reception@gavinlobohealth.co.nz and we will send you our ADHD Intake, Medical History and Consent Form.
Step 2: Return Your Consent Form
Mandi, our Registered Nurse, reviews your form before anything else is sent. This makes sure an ADHD assessment is the right next step for you.
Step 3: ADHD Questionnaires
Once your form is approved, we send four sets of questionnaires to complete:
• Adult ADHD Pre-Assessment and Life History Questionnaire
• ASRS – adult ADHD screening tool
• WURS-25 – covering childhood symptoms
• A short screening set covering mood, anxiety and alcohol use
Allow approximately 90 minutes. You can complete these over several sittings.
Step 4: Pre-Assessment Review and Blood Tests
Mandi reviews your completed questionnaires and sends your blood test request electronically to Awanui Labs. There is no paper form, and you can attend any Awanui collection centre.
Please complete your blood tests at least one working day before your appointment.
An ECG is also required if you are aged 45 years or over, or have a relevant cardiac history.
Step 5: Your ADHD Assessment
Your appointment is in two parts:
• 45 minutes with Mandi, Registered Nurse
• 30 minutes with Dr Gavin Lobo
Dr Lobo completes your diagnostic assessment, discusses the outcome with you and, if ADHD is diagnosed, discusses treatment options.
If medication is started, you will be given a medication titration plan.
Step 6: Medication Titration and 4-Week Review
Mandi will check in with you approximately 2 weeks after starting medication to see how you are getting on.
At 4 weeks, you will have a medication review with Dr Lobo.
Dr Lobo will review your response to medication, how long it is lasting, any side effects and your overall symptom control. Your medication and dose will be adjusted as needed, which may include changing to a longer-acting medication.
Step 7: Medication Stabilisation and GP Handover
You will see Dr Lobo again 4 weeks later for your final medication review.
At this appointment, Dr Lobo will review your response to treatment and confirm your ongoing medication plan.
Patients enrolled with Gavin Lobo Health:
Your ongoing ADHD care and prescribing will continue with Gavin Lobo Health. Once stable, your next routine medication review will be in 3 months.
Casual patients who remain enrolled with their usual GP:
Following your final review, we will send your usual GP your ADHD assessment report and clinical handover, including your diagnosis, stabilised medication and dose, and relevant prescribing information including Special Authority details.
Your usual GP can then take over your ongoing ADHD care and prescribing.
Important Information
- - Completing the initial questionnaires does not guarantee an ADHD diagnosis or a prescription for medication.
- - A formal ADHD diagnosis is based solely on a comprehensive clinical assessment by a doctor.
- - Incomplete questionnaires or outstanding laboratory tests will delay your formal assessment.
- - Additional collateral history (such as school reports or interviews with family members) may be requested where clinically appropriate.

To help you plan your care, our fees are set out below. The total depends on whether you are enrolled with Gavin Lobo Health or remain enrolled with your usual GP.
